Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
The Kigoma 6-Bar Frontosa is one of the most iconic and impressive African cichlids, endemic to the deeper waters of Lake Tanganyika near Kigoma, Tanzania. Adults develop a large nuchal hump and can reach 35cm. They are slow-growing, long-lived fish that are best kept in groups in very large aquaria with subdued lighting to replicate their deep-water habitat.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; very stable temperature; avoid fluctuations. Tank: Minimum 500L; spacious with open swimming areas, some rocky structure and caves. Feeding: Carnivore diet of large sinking pellets, whole prawns, frozen fish, and krill; feed every 2-3 days. Behaviour: Calm and slow-moving; males dominant in groups but rarely cause serious injury to tankmates. Compatibility: Frontosa colony or with other very large, peaceful Tanganyika cichlids only.
