Cyprinus rubrofuscus (domesticated koi)
Origin: Captive bred
Kikusui is a Doitsu (scale-reduced) metallic koi of the Hariwake variety, displaying orange or red hi markings over a gleaming white platinum metallic body. The absence of normal scale rows in the Doitsu form means the metallic lustre is displayed across the entire uninterrupted body surface, creating a spectacularly clean and brilliant appearance. The combination of warm hi colours on a platinum metallic base makes Kikusui one of the most visually striking metallic koi varieties.
House in a well-filtered pond of at least 2,000 L. Maintain pH 7.0–8.5, temperature 5–25°C; fully cold-hardy. Feed quality koi pellets with colour-enhancing carotenoid supplements to maintain the depth and vibrancy of the hi markings. UV sterilization and good water clarity are especially important with metallic varieties as the sheen is best appreciated in clear water with good sunlight. Compatible with all koi varieties.
