Blood Parrot hybrid (Cichlasomatinae)
Also known as: King Kong Parrot, King Kong Blood Parrot
Origin: Captive bred (hybrid)
The King Kong Parrot Cichlid represents a selective development of the Blood Parrot lineage that emphasises body mass and colour intensity. These fish grow considerably larger than standard Blood Parrots, with well-fed adults capable of reaching 25cm, and display a fuller, more rounded body shape that amplifies their parrot-like silhouette.
Despite their imposing size, King Kong Parrots retain the gentle, peaceable nature of standard Blood Parrots and can often be kept successfully with a range of medium to large aquarium fish. They are interactive, recognise their owners, and will actively solicit food at feeding time.
Like all Blood Parrot derivatives, the King Kong Parrot may have a partially fused mouth that limits prey size. However, they adapt readily to pellet and frozen foods and rarely have feeding difficulties in a well-managed aquarium.
Water: 25–30°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water; sensitive to ammonia spikes. Tank: Minimum 250L; can be kept with other medium-large cichlids; provide caves and open swimming space. Feeding: Omnivore; floating cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, krill; mouth shape may require medium pellet sizes. Breeding: Generally infertile males; females can spawn with compatible cichlids but eggs rarely develop normally. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; suitable with medium-large non-aggressive cichlids, large tetras, and catfish.
