Caridina cantonensis var. 'King Kong'
Also known as: King Kong Shrimp, KK Shrimp
Origin: Selectively bred; base species from Southern China
The King Kong Shrimp is a landmark Taiwan Bee Caridina morph bred for complete, solid body color saturation — either deep red or jet black — with no white banding. This represents a fundamental departure from Crystal Bee patterning into full-body pigmentation. Achieving and maintaining the King Kong phenotype requires careful selective breeding and strict water management: soft, acidic, ultra-low TDS water with an active buffering substrate is essential. Their velvety, uniform appearance stands out dramatically in planted aquariums against green or dark backgrounds. Regular feeding with high-quality shrimp foods and a stable biofilm base helps maintain health and color vibrancy.
Water: pH 5.8–6.8, TDS 80–130 ppm, temperature 20–24°C; RO water with Caridina mineral additive and active buffering substrate. Tank: 30–60 litres dedicated shrimp tank; moss-heavy with sponge filtration. Feeding: Premium shrimp pellets, biofilm, algae, leaf litter. Breeding: Breed true when kept in a species-only tank; remove mixed-pattern offspring. Compatibility: Species-only; do not house with Neocaridina or fish.
