Hyphessobrycon heliacus
Also known as: Kitty Tetra
Origin: South America (Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina)
Hyphessobrycon heliacus or a closely related Hyphessobrycon, the Kitty Tetra, ranges across Brazil, Bolivia, and Argentina. It is a robust, adaptable, and long-lived species tolerating a very broad range of water conditions including cooler subtropical temperatures. While not as dramatically coloured as other tetras, its active schooling behaviour and hardiness make it an excellent community fish.
Water: 18–28°C, pH 6.0–7.8, very adaptable; suitable for subtropical tanks. Tank: 80 L minimum; community or planted setup; very tolerant of varied conditions. Feeding: Accepts all standard aquarium foods — flake, pellets, and frozen invertebrates. Behaviour: Peaceful, active schooling species; keep 8+; compatible with a wide range of tank mates. Compatibility: Excellent with virtually any peaceful community fish of comparable size.
