Cyprinus rubrofuscus (domesticated koi)
Origin: Captive bred
The Kohaku is the most iconic and universally recognised koi variety, displaying a pure white body with bold red (hi) markings that together form the foundation pattern of the entire Gosanke group. This small grade is ideal for garden ponds where the fish will continue to grow steadily, develop and refine their hi pattern over time, and potentially become impressive specimens over the coming years. Purchasing small Kohaku and watching them develop is a deeply satisfying aspect of the koi-keeping hobby.
Start in a well-filtered pond of at least 1,000 L. Maintain pH 7.0–8.5, temperature 5–25°C; cold-hardy through Northern European winters. Feed quality koi pellets or sticks seasonally. Hi colouration develops more richly with a quality carotenoid-rich diet. UV sterilization and regular water changes maintain the white base clean and unblemished. Compatible with all other koi varieties.
