Pterophyllum scalare
Also known as: Koi Angelfish, Koi Angel
Origin: South America
The Koi Angelfish is a selectively bred form of Pterophyllum scalare combining elements of gold, black, and red-orange colouration to mimic the appearance of Japanese koi. Each fish displays unique patterning. Hardy and adaptable, it suits both community and species-focused planted aquariums.
Water: 24-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: Minimum 120L tall aquarium, plants and driftwood, avoid strong currents. Feeding: Quality angelfish pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, fine flake. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; pairs defend territory during spawning, particularly against similar-looking fish. Compatibility: Good with medium tetras, peaceful catfish, and rasboras; avoid fin-nippers.
