Nothobranchius korthausae
Origin: Tanzania (Mafia Island)
Nothobranchius korthausae is a vibrant annual killifish from Mafia Island off the Tanzanian coast, with males showcasing brilliant red and blue-black banding or spotted patterns depending on the population collected — color and pattern intensity making it one of the more eye-catching Nothobranchius species. Like all Nothobranchius, the eggs must be incubated in moist peat or substrate to simulate the dry season diapause before hatching when rewetted, replicating the natural boom-bust cycle of their seasonal pool habitat. A captivating species for killifish enthusiasts who appreciate its brief but intensely beautiful life.
Keep a small group (1 male, 2–3 females) in a dedicated tank of at least 40 L. Maintain pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 22–26°C, moderate hardness. Feed live or frozen small prey exclusively: Artemia, Daphnia, micro worms. Provide peat fiber substrate for egg-laying. After 6–8 weeks, collect substrate with eggs, allow to dry slightly, then store at room temperature in a sealed bag for 8–12 weeks before rewetting to trigger hatching. Lifespan is under 12 months.
