Koungue Killifish

Aphyosemion koungueense is a rarely kept non-annual killifish from a restricted range of forest streams in the Koungue area of Cameroon. Males display a striking mosaic of blue, green, and red scale colouration, making them visually comparable to more widely kept Aphyosemion species. The species is known from very few collections and its wild population status is poorly documented.

Care requirements align with other Cameroonian Aphyosemion: soft, slightly acidic water in a 40 L species tank with plant cover and a spawning mop. Eggs incubate in damp peat for two to three weeks. The species is reportedly moderately sensitive to water quality changes, and consistent water changes are recommended.

A. koungueense is a genuine rarity in the killifish hobby, available only through dedicated hobbyist networks and specialist breeders who maintain the species. For collectors seeking the uncommon, it is a prized acquisition.

Water: 20–24 °C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft to very soft water (GH 1–6). Tank: 40 L species tank with peat filtration; avoid bright lighting. Feeding: Live micro worms, Artemia nauplii, small Daphnia; feed daily. Breeding: Collect spawning mop every 7–10 days; incubate eggs in damp peat 2–3 weeks. Compatibility: Species tank only due to rarity and sensitivity.
