Cyprinus rubrofuscus
Also known as: Kumonryu Koi, Nine Dragon Koi, Dragon Koi
Origin: Japan
Kumonryu ("nine-tattooed dragon") is a Doitsu-scaled koi with a dramatic black-and-white pattern that famously changes with water temperature and season — a phenomenon that fascinates koi enthusiasts. In summer it may appear mostly black, while in winter it can become largely white. No two Kumonryu are identical, and each fish is a constantly evolving artwork.
Water: 5–25°C, pH 6.8–7.8, stable water quality supports dramatic seasonal color changes. Pond: minimum 1,000 L; deeper ponds with temperature swings show off the color-change trait. Feeding: quality koi pellets; color-enhancing foods may interfere with natural black-white pattern. Behaviour: active and curious; the color changes add a dynamic dimension to pond observation. Compatibility: all koi varieties; peaceful community pond fish.
