Danio kyathit
Also known as: Kyathit Danio, Orange-finned Danio
Origin: Myanmar
Danio kyathit is a captivating species from the streams of northern Myanmar that exhibits remarkable intraspecific polymorphism: individuals within the same population can display either a pattern of dark spots on a silver body or horizontal stripes broadly similar to the Zebra Danio. Both forms share vivid orange finnage that becomes particularly intense in breeding condition.
In the aquarium, Kyathit Danios behave identically to other danio species: active, gregarious schoolers that do best in groups of eight or more. They are not selective about food and will eagerly take flakes, pellets, and small live or frozen foods. Their hardiness makes them suitable for community aquariums from beginner level upward.
The polymorphic nature of the species is a draw for hobbyists interested in fish genetics and intraspecific variation. Maintaining a mixed group of spotted and striped individuals can be rewarding, and the species will readily interbreed in captivity.
Water: Temperature 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–15; adaptable to a broad range of tap-water conditions. Tank: Minimum 60 L; good open swimming space with planted zones along the perimeter; tight-fitting lid essential. Feeding: Omnivorous; flake, micro-pellets, and small frozen foods; live daphnia and brine shrimp improve colour and condition. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; both spotted and striped forms readily interbreed; separating forms is needed to maintain strain purity. Compatibility: Peaceful with similarly sized community fish; avoid housing with slow, delicate species susceptible to harassment.
