Leporacanthicus galaxias
Origin: Venezuela, Brazil (Orinoco and upper Amazon)
Leporacanthicus galaxias (L007), the Galaxy or Vampire Pleco, is a magnificent species from the Orinoco and upper Amazon systems, covered in a dense constellation of small white dots over jet-black skin that creates a striking, starfield-like appearance. It possesses unique unicorn-like teeth adaptations for scraping invertebrates and protein-rich biofilm from rock surfaces and is more carnivorous than most loricariids — it should be fed meaty, protein-rich foods. A territorial species that needs ample individual hiding places in a large, warm, well-oxygenated aquarium.
House singly or as a mated pair in a spacious aquarium (minimum 300 L) with large smooth caves, driftwood, and good water flow. Maintain warm, soft to moderately hard water (pH 6.0–7.5, GH 2–12) at 26–30°C with excellent oxygenation. Feed primarily protein-rich carnivore foods: frozen shrimp, mussels, sinking carnivore pellets, and occasional bloodworm. One cave per fish is essential to prevent territorial fighting. Water changes of 25–30% weekly.
