Baryancistrus xanthellus
Also known as: Gold Nugget Pleco, L018, L085, L177
Origin: Brazil (Rio Xingu)
Baryancistrus xanthellus, the Gold Nugget Pleco, is one of the most recognisable plecos in the aquarium trade. Native to the warm, fast-flowing rocky stretches of the Rio Xingu, it demands high water temperatures and excellent oxygenation. Its omnivorous diet includes biofilm, algae wafers, and meaty supplements, and it grows to a substantial size requiring a spacious aquarium.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft and well-oxygenated; very high flow preferred. Tank: Rocky caves and smooth boulders; driftwood; minimum 200L. Feeding: Biofilm grazer; supplement with algae wafers, Repashy, and occasional meaty foods. Behaviour: Nocturnal; territorial toward similar-looking plecos — avoid tankmates with gold spots. Compatibility: Peaceful with most community fish; semi-aggressive toward conspecifics.
