Hypancistrus zebra
Also known as: Zebra Pleco, L046, Imperial Pleco
Origin: Brazil (Rio Xingu)
Hypancistrus zebra (L046) is arguably the most famous loricariid in the hobby. Endemic to the warm, fast-flowing rocky rapids of the Rio Xingu, it has been CITES Appendix III listed since 2004, making captive-bred specimens the only legal source. It is predominantly carnivorous and requires pristine water conditions with very high oxygen levels and warm temperatures, but rewards dedicated keepers with cave breeding.
Water: 28–32°C, pH 6.0–7.0, very soft; extremely high flow and oxygenation mandatory. Tank: Multiple small caves; sandy substrate with rocks; minimum 80L for a pair. Feeding: Carnivore; bloodworms, Artemia, Daphnia, and high-protein Repashy — limited algae. Behaviour: Cave spawner; males guard eggs; nocturnal and reclusive during daylight. Compatibility: Peaceful with small community fish; keep only captive-bred specimens.
