Peckoltia compta
Origin: Brazil (lower Rio Tapajós)
Peckoltia compta (L134), the Leopard Frog Pleco, is one of the most visually striking dwarf plecos available in the hobby, originating from the lower Rio Tapajós in Brazil and adorned with bold contrasting black and yellow stripes on the body that fade toward the tail into a spotted pattern, evoking the appearance of a leopard frog. It remains a manageable adult size and is well-suited to medium-sized aquariums with driftwood, rockwork, and moderate flow. Feed a varied diet of vegetables, sinking pellets, and occasional protein foods.
House in an aquarium (minimum 150 L) with driftwood caves, smooth rocks, and moderate water flow. Maintain soft to moderately hard water (pH 6.5–7.5, GH 2–12) at 26–30°C with good oxygenation. Feed varied omnivore diet: algae wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette, sweet potato), sinking pellets, and occasional frozen shrimp or bloodworm. Provide one cave per pleco. Peaceful with most community fish; may dispute with other plecos.
