Ancistrus dolichopterus
Also known as: Starlight Bristlenose, L183, Starlight Pleco
Origin: Brazil (Rio Negro)
Ancistrus dolichopterus (L183) hails from the dark, acidic waters of the Rio Negro in Brazil. Its jet-black body is covered in small white spots and edged with white fin margins, creating a dramatic starlight effect. It requires soft, acidic water to thrive and is an excellent grazer in well-planted blackwater biotopes.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 4.5–6.5, very soft; blackwater conditions ideal. Tank: Driftwood essential; tannin-rich water; caves for spawning; minimum 80L. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, driftwood grazing, blanched greens, spirulina. Behaviour: Nocturnal; males guard eggs in caves — provide one cave per male. Compatibility: Ideal for blackwater community tanks with tetras, dwarf cichlids, and small catfish.
