Baryancistrus demantoides
Origin: Venezuela (Ventuari and Orinoco rivers)
Baryancistrus demantoides (L200), the Green Phantom Pleco, is a breathtaking species from the Ventuari and Orinoco rivers of Venezuela, covered in tiny cream-to-yellow spots over a rich dark olive-green body that creates a mesmerizing, jewel-like appearance. This large, robust pleco demands pristine, warm, highly oxygenated water and appreciates smooth boulders and driftwood arranged to provide stable territories in the aquarium. A highlight fish for advanced aquarists with appropriately large facilities.
House singly in a very large aquarium (minimum 300 L) with smooth boulders, large slate caves, and strong directional water flow replicating the fast Orinoco rapids. Maintain warm, soft water (pH 6.0–7.0, GH 2–10) at 26–30°C with excellent oxygenation. Feed varied omnivore diet: algae wafers, blanched vegetables, sinking pellets, and occasional frozen shrimp. Performs best with pristine water — large weekly water changes (30%) are essential.
