Panaque sp. L270
Also known as: Papa Panaque, L270
Origin: Brazil (Rio Negro)
Panaque sp. L270 is a large loricariid from the Rio Negro drainage in Brazil, sharing the genus' specialised xylophagy (wood eating) and requiring substantial driftwood as a core dietary component. Its dark, heavily scaled body and robust build suit very large aquariums where it can exercise its natural wood-rasping behaviours.
Water: 25–30°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft; very strong filtration for high waste production. Tank: Minimum 300L; very large driftwood pieces; robust aquascape. Feeding: Xylophage; driftwood essential; supplement algae wafers and large blanched vegetables. Behaviour: Nocturnal; territorial toward other large Panaque; significant waste producer. Compatibility: Large tank setups only; keep with similarly large, robust fish.
