Aphyosemion labarrei
Also known as: Labarr's Killifish, Labarrei Killifish
Origin: DR Congo
Aphyosemion labarrei is a strikingly coloured non-annual killifish from the Congo basin of the DR Congo. Males display deep blue body colouration densely overlaid with vivid red-orange spots, creating a visual effect that is among the most spectacular in the genus. The species inhabits slow-moving and still forest watercourses with very soft, acidic, tannin-stained water.
Successful maintenance of A. labarrei requires very soft, acidic water — the species is sensitive to hardness and alkalinity levels above those of its natural blackwater habitat. A 40 L species tank with peat filtration, floating plants for diffused lighting, and a spawning mop is ideal. Eggs are collected and incubated in damp peat for two to three weeks.
A. labarrei is a species for dedicated intermediate-to-advanced killifish keepers who can provide the water chemistry it requires. Its spectacular colouration is a genuine reward for the effort invested in its care.
Water: 22–26 °C, pH 5.5–6.5, very soft water (GH 1–5) — hardness is critical. Tank: 40 L species tank with peat filtration; floating plants to diffuse light. Feeding: Live Artemia nauplii, micro worms, small Daphnia; feed daily. Breeding: Collect mop eggs every 7–10 days; incubate in damp peat for 2–3 weeks. Compatibility: Species tank only; hardwater or community setups will cause stress.
