Labeotropheus fuelleborni
Also known as: OB Fuelleborni, Orange Blotch Fuelleborni, Fuelleborn's Cichlid OB
Origin: Lake Malawi (southern and western shores)
Labeotropheus fuelleborni OB is the orange-blotched morph of the Fuelleborn's Cichlid, one of the two Labeotropheus species in Lake Malawi. The OB (orange blotched) gene produces irregular patches of orange, black, and white across the body, making each individual uniquely patterned. The species is larger than its relative L. trewavasae and possesses the same characteristic downturned snout adapted for algae scraping.
In natural populations the OB pattern is more common in females, but tank-bred lines have produced OB males. Labeotropheus fuelleborni inhabits rocky shores throughout Lake Malawi, particularly in the southern and western portions of the lake. Its large body and robust constitution make it one of the dominant species in mbuna communities.
In the aquarium, the OB Fuelleborni is an impressive fish — large, patterned, and extremely active. It requires a spacious aquarium with ample rockwork and a reliable herbivore diet. Its size means it can be housed with even the most aggressive mbuna species, and its striking OB patterning ensures it is always a focal point in the display.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.8-8.5, hard alkaline; frequent water changes essential given large size and high metabolism. Tank: 300L minimum; large flat rocks and heavy aquascape; one of the largest mbuna needing plenty of territory. Feeding: Strict herbivore diet — spirulina pellets, blanched greens, Nori; protein-heavy diet risks Malawi Bloat. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; large clutches of 20-35 eggs; females require recovery periods post-release. Compatibility: Aggressive large mbuna; suitable with other large robust species only; beginner-friendly despite size.
