Labidochromis hongi
Also known as: Hongi Cichlid, Red Top Hongi
Origin: Lake Malawi (Hongi Island, northern Malawi)
Labidochromis hongi, endemic to Hongi Island and surrounding areas in northern Lake Malawi, is one of the most vividly coloured species in its genus. Dominant males develop a rich orange-red body with a sharply contrasting black dorsal fin and subtle blue iridescence across the flanks. Females and subdominant males are considerably plainer, showing brownish-yellow tones.
In its natural habitat, this species lives among densely packed boulder fields where it grazes on aufwuchs and picks small invertebrates from rock surfaces. The species name 'hongi' references its island of origin, and different island populations show slight colour variations, adding to its collector appeal.
In the aquarium, Labidochromis hongi is moderately aggressive and does best in a harem arrangement. It can be mixed with other northern Lake Malawi endemics or placed in a species-specific biotope for best colour expression. Males in good condition display their orange-red colouration most intensely.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.8-8.5, hard and alkaline; 25-30% weekly water changes to maintain water quality. Tank: 200L minimum; ample rockwork with open areas for swimming and clear line-of-sight breaks. Feeding: Spirulina-based cichlid pellets as staple; supplement with frozen brine shrimp and mysis. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; females incubate 12-20 eggs for around 3 weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. Compatibility: Moderately aggressive; house with similarly sized mbuna; avoid very passive species.
