Labidochromis joanjohnsonae

Labidochromis joanjohnsonae is one of the lesser-known members of its genus, endemic to Eccles Reef in the central part of Lake Malawi. Males display a distinctive pale lilac to white body with a clean black horizontal stripe running from snout to caudal peduncle. The subtle colouration belies the fish's appeal — it is a calm, elegant mbuna that stands out for its understated beauty.

This species was first described relatively recently and remains uncommon in the aquarium trade, which makes acquiring specimens an achievement for the dedicated cichlid hobbyist. In the wild it occupies intermediate zones between rocky and sandy habitats, foraging on both algae and small invertebrates.

In the aquarium, Labidochromis joanjohnsonae is among the more peaceable mbuna, making it suitable for community Malawi setups. It performs well with other Labidochromis species as long as males are not housed together, and can be kept alongside similarly sized haplochromines.

Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.8-8.5, hard alkaline; stable parameters are critical for this less commonly kept species. Tank: 180L minimum; moderate rockwork with open sandy areas reflecting its natural habitat preference. Feeding: Cichlid pellets with spirulina, supplemented with frozen mysis; avoid high-protein live foods exclusively. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; small clutches of 8-15 eggs; females should be isolated to a breeding tank if possible. Compatibility: One of the more peaceful mbuna; suitable for community Malawi tanks with similar-sized species.
