Labidochromis pallidus
Also known as: Pale Labidochromis, White Mbuna
Origin: Lake Malawi (western shore)
Labidochromis pallidus is a subtly coloured mbuna inhabiting the rocky shores of Lake Malawi's western coast. Its name, meaning 'pale', accurately describes the creamy-white to light yellow body with faint, irregular darker barring. While lacking the vivid colouration of some of its relatives, it possesses a quiet elegance and stands out in a mixed community through its clean, light body.
This species is one of the more peaceful Labidochromis and is therefore easier to manage in community cichlid aquariums. It feeds on aufwuchs and invertebrates in the wild, using its characteristic pointed snout to probe rocky crevices. Females are slightly more brownish and difficult to distinguish from females of related species.
In the aquarium, Labidochromis pallidus is an excellent choice for hobbyists new to mbuna keeping. It tolerates less extreme water chemistry than many other mbuna and can coexist with a range of Malawi cichlid species. Its calm disposition makes it ideal as a 'buffer' species among more boisterous tank mates.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.8-8.5, hard alkaline; performs well with stable, clean water conditions. Tank: 180L minimum; moderate rockwork sufficient; less territorial than many mbuna so smaller setups feasible. Feeding: Spirulina pellets and flakes as staple; supplement with frozen brine shrimp twice weekly. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; small clutches of 8-15 eggs; relatively undemanding breeder. Compatibility: Among the most compatible mbuna; pairs well with electric yellow, other Labidochromis, and peacocks.
