Mylochromis labidodon
Also known as: Labidodon Hap
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
The Labidodon Hap is equipped with a specialised dentition suited for processing sandy substrate to extract food items. Males develop subdued blue-grey patterning at maturity. In the aquarium it should be provided with a deep, fine sand substrate to allow natural sifting behaviour. It is moderately peaceful when kept with appropriate tankmates.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.5-9.0, hard alkaline water; fine sand substrate is mandatory. Tank: Minimum 300L; deep fine sand (5cm+) to accommodate sifting behaviour. Feeding: Sinking cichlid pellets and frozen mysis; will also process sand for microorganisms. Behaviour: Sand-sifting forager; males semi-aggressive around spawning sites. Compatibility: Peacock and hap community; compatible with non-substrate-disturbing species.
