Labrochromis ishmaeli
Also known as: Ishmael's Victorian Cichlid, Victorian Thick-Lip
Origin: Lake Victoria, East Africa
Labrochromis ishmaeli is a Victorian haplochromine from rocky shorelines of Lake Victoria with characteristically thickened lips used to probe rock surfaces and crevices for invertebrate prey. The genus Labrochromis is named for these distinctive labral adaptations. Males in full breeding colour display a rich combination of deep blue and yellow colouration that makes them outstanding aquarium specimens.
In the aquarium, L. ishmaeli requires extensive rocky décor to express natural foraging behaviour and establish territories. Its diet should be protein-heavy, consisting primarily of frozen invertebrates supplemented with quality cichlid pellets. Plant-based supplementation prevents bloat. The species is a maternal mouthbrooder with moderate to high aggression toward conspecific males.
Intermediate-level aquarists with Victorian cichlid experience will find L. ishmaeli a rewarding species that combines visual appeal with interesting natural foraging behaviour.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 7.0-8.5, hard alkaline; weekly 25-30% water changes. Tank: 200L minimum; dense rocky décor with crevices; strong filtration. Feeding: Frozen invertebrates primary; cichlid pellets and some spirulina; protein-heavy diet. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; cave-associated territory preferred. Compatibility: Victorian community; one male; compatible with dissimilar Victorian species.
