Crenicichla lacustris
Also known as: Lacustris Pike Cichlid, Atlantic Pike Cichlid, Southeastern Pike Cichlid
Origin: Atlantic coastal rivers, southeastern Brazil
Crenicichla lacustris is one of the most widely distributed pike cichlids along the Atlantic coast of southeastern Brazil, found in rivers from São Paulo south through Paraná. It is a robust and adaptable species that has been in the European hobby for several decades, appreciated for its hardiness relative to many Amazonian Crenicichla. The broad dark lateral band and attractively spotted flanks make it a visually solid display fish.
Unlike many pike cichlids, C. lacustris tolerates a reasonably wide range of water parameters and even moderate hardness — a significant practical advantage for aquarists in Central Europe with harder tap water. Temperatures of 20–27°C reflect its subtropical distribution and it does not require high tropical warmth. Moderate oxygenation and good filtration are the key requirements.
At 25 cm C. lacustris needs a 300 L tank minimum. It is a proven species in captivity with documented breeding records. A reliable cave spawner, it exhibits strong biparental care and is one of the better choices for aquarists looking to breed a larger, Atlantic-slope Crenicichla without specialist water requirements.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5 at 20–27°C; moderate hardness (up to 18 dGH) tolerated — one of the most adaptable Crenicichla. Tank: 300 L with sandy substrate, driftwood caves, and smooth rock formations. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods and cichlid pellets accepted readily; a straightforward feeder. Breeding: Cave spawner with strong biparental care; relatively easy to breed for a medium-large pike cichlid. Compatibility: Can share with large robust cichlids; bonded pairs work best as a species setup.
