Origin: Papua New Guinea (Lake Kutubu)
Endemic to Lake Kutubu in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, Melanotaenia lacustris inhabits clear, alkaline, hard water rich in dissolved minerals. Males display brilliant turquoise-blue colouration with yellow-green undertones, intensifying during spawning. A hardy and adaptable species once established, ideal for the dedicated rainbowfish community aquarium.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 7.5–8.5, hard water (GH 12–20, KH 6–12). Tank: 200 L+, open swimming lanes, robust or hardy plants. Feeding: Omnivore; flakes, pellets, and regular frozen/live foods. Behaviour: Peaceful, active schooling fish; males display to each other constantly. Compatibility: Excellent with other rainbowfish and similarly sized peaceful species.
