Melanotaenia lacustris
Origin: Lake Kutubu, Papua New Guinea
The Lake Kutubu Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia lacustris) is renowned for its vibrant blue and yellow coloration, named after its native Lake Kutubu in Papua New Guinea. Males intensify in colour during courtship displays, making them one of the most visually dramatic rainbowfish species available. They thrive in well-planted aquariums with ample open swimming space.
Keep in groups of 6 or more in a spacious aquarium of at least 150 L. Provide open swimming areas alongside planted margins. Feed a varied diet of quality flake, frozen daphnia, and small live foods. Water should be slightly alkaline and well-oxygenated. Males will display boldly toward each other without serious injury.
