Synodontis polli
Also known as: Lake Poopo Synodontis, Poll's Synodontis, Poll's Squeaker
Origin: Lake Tanganyika region
Synodontis polli is a Lake Tanganyika endemic named in honour of the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll, who contributed enormously to knowledge of African freshwater fish. It bears an unusual coloration — pale or white spots on a darker background, the inverse of many Synodontis — that makes it instantly recognisable among rift-lake catfish.
In the aquarium it thrives under standard Tanganyika conditions: hard, alkaline water, a rocky aquascape and stable temperatures. It is a moderately shy species that becomes more visible and confident in groups or in setups where adequate hiding places are available at various heights within the aquascape.
This species is considered a collector's fish due to its limited availability and its status as a genuine Tanganyika endemic, adding biogeographic interest to rift-lake display aquariums.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 7.5–9.0, hard (GH 10–20, KH 5–15); Tanganyika buffer or mineral additives essential. Tank: 200 L minimum; dense rocky aquascape; stable alkalinity; moderate to strong circulation. Feeding: Sinking pellets, Spirulina wafers, frozen mysis and bloodworm; varied diet maintains condition. Breeding: Cave spawner; rarely documented; dedicated breeding setup with conditioning recommended. Compatibility: Peaceful with Tanganyikan cichlids; provide one cave per individual to minimise territorial disputes.
