Origin: Papua New Guinea (Lake Tebera)
Endemic to Lake Tebera in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi inhabits clear, moderately hard water. Mature males develop an intensely deep yellow to golden body that is among the most vivid single-colour displays in the genus. Requires good water quality and regular partial water changes to maintain health and colour.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard water (GH 8–15). Tank: 120 L+, open swimming space with some plant cover at the margins. Feeding: Omnivore; varied diet of flakes, pellets, and frozen/live foods. Behaviour: Active, peaceful schooling fish; males display frequently among themselves. Compatibility: Good community fish with similarly sized peaceful species.
