Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi
Origin: Lake Tebera, Papua New Guinea
Named in honour of the late Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod, the Lake Tebera Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi) from the Papua New Guinea highlands displays a striking yellow-green body with vivid red fin tips. It appreciates cooler water temperatures than many other rainbowfish. Groups of six or more allow males to display their full coloration as they posture against one another.
Keep in groups of at least 6 in an aquarium of 120 L or more. Provide cooler water (20–25°C) with moderate flow. Feed quality flake, small live foods, and frozen daphnia. Well-planted tanks with open swimming space are ideal. Males display vibrant colours in competition with each other.
