Glossolepis wanamensis
Also known as: Lake Wanam Rainbowfish
Origin: Papua New Guinea (Lake Wanam)
Glossolepis wanamensis is endemic to the tiny Lake Wanam near Lae in Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. Introductions of predatory fish have nearly wiped out wild populations, making the aquarium hobby an important refuge for the species. Males display stunning deep green-teal colouration with vivid red fins. Requires similar care to other Glossolepis species with good water quality and regular feeding.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.5–8.5, moderately hard to hard water. Tank: 100 L+, clean water with regular partial changes; good filtration. Feeding: Omnivore; quality flakes, pellets, and frozen/live foods for best colour. Behaviour: Active, peaceful schooling fish; males display intense colour when well-kept. Compatibility: Good community fish; an important conservation species to support.
