Lamprologus callipterus
Also known as: Callipterus Shell Cichlid, Harem Shell Cichlid
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Lamprologus callipterus displays one of the most extreme sexual size differences in the fish world, with males reaching 15cm while females remain under 4cm. Males collect and guard a cluster of large snail shells, each occupied by a female who spawns inside. The shell-collection and harem-guarding behaviour makes this a uniquely fascinating species for experienced aquarists.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water. Tank: 120L minimum; sandy substrate with large Neothauma shells for females; open space for the dominant male. Feeding: Quality carnivore pellet for the male; micro-pellet or crushed flake for females. Behaviour: Dominant male guards harem; satellite males attempt sneaky fertilisations — fascinating to observe. Compatibility: Upper-level Cyprichromis or Paracyprichromis; avoid similarly shell-using species.
