Lamprologus similis
Also known as: Similis Shell Dweller
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Lamprologus similis is nearly identical in appearance to Neolamprologus multifasciatus and was confused with it for many years. It is distinguished by finer barring and slightly different behaviour. Both sexes stay tiny and live in colonies within shell beds. Extremely entertaining in a species or near-species small aquarium, where their energetic shell-carrying behaviour can be fully appreciated.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water. Tank: 40L for a colony of 6-8; deep fine sand substrate; provide several small shells per individual. Feeding: Micro-pellet, powdered cichlid food, baby brine shrimp nauplii. Behaviour: Colony with dominant male and multiple females; females guard shells fiercely against neighbours. Compatibility: Species tank recommended; or upper-water Paracyprichromis in larger setups.
