Lamprologus speciosus
Also known as: Blotched Shell Dweller, Speciosus Shell Cichlid
Origin: Lake Tanganyika (southern basin)
Lamprologus speciosus is a rarely exported shell-dwelling cichlid from the southern basin of Lake Tanganyika, where it inhabits sandy flats studded with empty gastropod shells. The body is a warm sandy-tan overlaid with a bold pattern of irregular dark blotches, giving a mottled, camouflage-like appearance that blends perfectly with the lake floor. Mature males display extended dorsal fin tips.
The species follows the standard Lamprologus shell-dweller social system: one dominant male establishes a territory around a shell cluster and courts multiple females to spawn within it. Each female independently incubates her eggs inside her shell, emerging with free-swimming fry after approximately ten days. The male's continued presence helps protect the colony from disturbance.
Speciosus is recommended for the intermediate hobbyist who wants an unusual, less-common shell dweller. It requires the same fundamental care as other Lamprologus shell dwellers — hard alkaline water, fine sand, and plenty of shells — but rewards that care with its striking patterning and engaging behavioural repertoire.
Water: pH 7.8–9.0, GH 12–20, KH 8–16, temperature 24–27 °C; pristine quality important. Tank: 40 L; fine sand; 4–6 shells; uncluttered sandy floor for territory display. Feeding: Frozen Artemia, Cyclops, Mysis; quality micro pellets; twice daily. Breeding: Shell-spawner; female solo brooder; fry accept Artemia nauplii. Compatibility: Species tank or with Cyprichromis; avoid other shell dwellers in the same tank.
