Rineloricaria lanceolata
Also known as: Lanceolata Whiptail, Chocolate Whiptail
Origin: South America (Bolivia, Brazil — Guaporé basin)
Rineloricaria lanceolata originates from the Guaporé basin on the Bolivia-Brazil border and is one of the more commonly available whiptail loricariids. Its mottled brown colouration makes it effectively invisible against sandy substrate and leaf litter. It is a hardy, adaptable species that grazes algae and organic detritus and breeds readily in captivity given appropriate conditions.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–15). Tank: 100 L minimum; fine sand or smooth gravel; leaf litter and cave-like shelters. Feeding: Algae wafers, sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables; grazes biofilm naturally. Behaviour: Peaceful; solitary or in small groups; mainly nocturnal. Compatibility: Peaceful with all community fish; safe in community setups.
