Hemiloricaria lanceolata
Also known as: Lanceolate Hemiloricaria, Paraná Whiptail
Origin: South America (Brazil, Paraguay — middle Paraná drainage)
Hemiloricaria lanceolata is distributed across the middle Paraná River drainage in Brazil and Paraguay. It is a relatively compact species with the typical Hemiloricaria body plan — slightly wider-headed than Rineloricaria, with a tapered rear body and characteristic banded patterning. The species is one of the more accessible Hemiloricaria for hobbyists due to its moderate hardiness and regular appearance in specialist stock lists.
In the aquarium, Hemiloricaria lanceolata thrives in standard South American community conditions. It accepts a wider range of water parameters than some congeners, reflecting the varied conditions of the Paraná drainage. Sand substrate, some driftwood, and a hollow tube or similar structure for shelter and spawning are sufficient to keep this species content.
This species is peaceful and unlikely to disturb any but the smallest invertebrates. It is a good candidate for hobbyists transitioning from corydoras to whiptail catfish, as its care demands are comparable and it adds visual diversity to a community bottom level.
Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–15); gentle to moderate flow. Tank: 60 L minimum; sand substrate; tube for spawning; driftwood for shelter. Feeding: Algae wafers, blanched zucchini and spinach, spirulina tablets. Breeding: Tube spawner; male guards; follows standard Hemiloricaria pattern. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent for Paraná or general South American community setups.
