Crossocheilus langei
Also known as: Lange's Algae Eater, Siamese Algae Eater, SAE
Origin: Southeast Asia
Crossocheilus langei is frequently mislabelled in the trade but is one of the genuine algae-consuming crossocheilus species, distinguished from impostors by the sharp, clear dark lateral stripe that extends to the tip of the caudal fin in adults. Unlike false SAE species, it actively grazes on problem algae including red algae and black beard algae. Young specimens are more actively herbivorous; adults may become lazier but remain useful. Peaceful toward other fish.
Water: 24–28 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–15). Tank: 150 L minimum; well-planted, good flow, plenty of surfaces for grazing. Feeding: Herbivore — algae wafers, blanched vegetables, spirulina; will also accept sinking pellets. Behaviour: Generally peaceful; can be territorial with its own kind in small tanks; keep singly or in 4+. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; pairs well with planted tank setups.
