About

Sinogastromyzon sp. 'Laos' is an undescribed species collected from highland streams in Laos, believed to be part of a species complex that remains under taxonomic revision. It displays a warm amber to golden-brown reticulated pattern with darker borders to each scale, giving it a tessellated appearance that is particularly attractive under bright aquarium lighting. Its body form is typical of the genus: broad, flat, with large wing-like paired fins adapted for life in powerful current.

In aquaria, Laos Sinogastromyzon requires the same fundamental conditions as other rheophilic hillstream species — strong flow, cool, highly oxygenated water, and a smooth substrate with ample algae-coated grazing surfaces. The species is intermediate in difficulty: less demanding than the most extreme hillstream specialists like Cryptotora, but more exacting than beginners' species such as the Chinese Butterfly Loach.

Given its undescribed status, published information is limited. Aquarium observations indicate that it is peaceful and groups up to six individuals can be maintained comfortably in 80 litres. As with all undescribed hillstream imports, responsible sourcing and careful quarantine are recommended.

Care Guide

Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 4–15, KH 2–8; high flow and very good oxygenation; cool water is preferred — avoid sustained temperatures above 26°C. Tank: 80 L minimum; smooth flat stones and rounded pebbles over fine gravel; powerhead-generated directional flow across the substrate. Feeding: Biofilm, diatoms, and microalgae; supplement with spirulina wafers, algae gel foods, and occasional blanched greens. Breeding: Unknown in captivity; condition as per related Sinogastromyzon species with cooler water changes and increased flow. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable for mixed hillstream biotopes with other cool-water rheophilic species from mainland Southeast Asia.
