Apistogramma megaptera
Also known as: Large-finned Apisto, Megaptera Apistogramma
Origin: South America
Apistogramma megaptera is aptly named for the extraordinarily large fins of mature males, whose dorsal and caudal fins are proportionally larger than in most other Apistogramma species. Found in Colombia, it requires soft acidic water and plenty of space for males to display. The effect of a fully coloured male in a well-planted aquarium is truly spectacular.
Water: 25-29°C, pH 5.0-6.8, soft (GH 1-6). Tank: 80L minimum, sand substrate, open swimming areas alongside caves and planting. Feeding: omnivore — live/frozen Artemia, bloodworm; high-quality cichlid micro-pellets. Behaviour: territorial during breeding; one male with two or three females recommended. Compatibility: peaceful community; avoid fin-nipping species to protect the large fins.
