Kryptopterus bicirrhis
Also known as: Large Glass Catfish, Giant Glass Catfish
Origin: Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia — Sumatra, Java, Borneo)
Kryptopterus bicirrhis is the larger of the two commonly kept glass catfish species, originating from Indonesia and Malaysia where it inhabits large, slow-moving rivers. Its transparent body and graceful, flowing form make it visually spectacular in groups. It is a midwater predator that hunts small fish and invertebrates but is peaceful enough for community tanks with appropriate-sized tankmates.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–12). Tank: 120 L minimum; gentle flow; open midwater space essential for active swimming. Feeding: Larger live and frozen foods: bloodworm, daphnia, chopped earthworm, small fish pellets. Behaviour: Active midwater schooler; keep 5+ for security; peaceful but will eat very small fish. Compatibility: Keep with fish too large to be eaten; avoid fin-nippers.
