Petrochromis macrognathus
Also known as: Large-jawed Petrochromis, Macrognathus Petrochromis
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
The Large-jawed Petrochromis is a herbivorous cichlid from the rocky littoral zone of Lake Tanganyika that grazes algae from rocks using its strongly curved, robust jaws. It is one of the larger Petrochromis species and is highly aggressive within its own species and toward other large cichlids. Like Tropheus, it requires a strictly plant-based diet to avoid digestive disorders.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; very high water quality essential; zero tolerance for protein waste. Tank: Minimum 400L; substantial rocky structure with algae growth on rocks. Feeding: Strictly herbivorous — spirulina pellets, algae wafers, blanched greens; no animal protein. Behaviour: Extremely aggressive among conspecifics; keep in large groups to spread aggression or as a bonded pair. Compatibility: Tanganyika specialist tank only; can work with other large Tanganyikans in very large setups.
