Baryancistrus sp. (L039)
Also known as: Large Mango Pleco, L039 Pleco, Mango Pleco
Origin: Rio Xingu, Brazil
The Large Mango Pleco (L039) is a spectacular loricariid endemic to the Rio Xingu, closely related to or synonymous with the broader Baryancistrus complex. It earns its common name from the vivid orange-mango colouration of its fins, which contrasts richly against the densely spotted dark grey-brown body. Fully grown specimens are showpiece fish by any measure.
L039 demands the high standards of water quality associated with all Xingu endemics — warm, well-oxygenated water with strong flow and minimal dissolved waste. It is an omnivore that grazes on algae and biofilm while also accepting meaty supplements. A diet of algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, driftwood, and occasional frozen protein foods maintains peak condition and bright fin colouration.
Due to its large adult size and strong personality, L039 requires a spacious aquarium with robust tankmates. It can be semi-aggressive toward conspecifics and similarly shaped bottom dwellers, so provide ample cave structures. Robust larger tetras, flag cichlids, and other Xingu species make excellent companions.
Water: pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 26–30°C, GH 2–10, KH 1–5; pristine Xingu-type conditions. Tank: 300 L minimum; rocky decor, large caves, powerful canister filter plus powerhead. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, blanched veg, sinking pellets, driftwood, frozen protein supplements. Breeding: Cave spawner; rarely bred; high-flow, warm-water dedicated setup required. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive with conspecifics; pairs well with robust mid-water Xingu community fish.
