Apistogramma pleurotaenia
Also known as: Large-scaled Apisto, Pleurotaenia Dwarf Cichlid, Big-scale Apistogramma
Origin: Brazil
Apistogramma pleurotaenia stands out from its genus mates by virtue of its unusually large lateral scales — proportionally much bigger than in most other Apistogramma — which catch aquarium lighting to produce a distinctive metallic shimmer across the flanks. This species is native to the soft, acidic rivers of the Brazilian Amazon and reaches a slightly larger size than many of its congeners.
Males display attractive blue-green body iridescence with dark lateral banding, and develop moderately elongated dorsal fin rays in mature specimens. The species is a competent cave spawner whose females are attentive and vigorous in their brood defense.
A. pleurotaenia occupies an intermediate position in terms of care requirements — softer water helps but it is not an extreme blackwater specialist — making it suitable for hobbyists with some experience in Apistogramma keeping.
Water: Soft to moderately soft — pH 4.5–6.5, temperature 25–29°C. Tank: 80 L; sandy substrate, driftwood caves, and plant clusters. Feeding: Live/frozen invertebrates and quality pellets accepted willingly. Breeding: Cave spawner; female broods exclusively; moderate difficulty. Compatibility: Peaceful small to medium South American species.
