About

Micropterus salmoides is the most recognised freshwater fish in North America, synonymous with sport fishing across the continent. Its enormous gape, capable of engulfing prey nearly half its own body length, combined with explosive strike behaviour, has made it a cultural phenomenon beyond the aquarium hobby. The distinctive dark lateral stripe running the length of the greenish body is diagnostic and highly recognisable.

In the aquarium, Largemouth Bass are spectacular but demanding. They grow large rapidly, require massive, warm-water tanks with excellent filtration, and will consume any tankmate that fits in their cavernous mouth. Their interactive nature — tracking movement, responding to the keeper, and readily accepting hand-offered food — makes them engaging pets for those with the facilities to house them properly.

They are best suited to either solitary setups or pairings with similarly sized predatory natives. Their hardiness and adaptability to a wide range of water conditions make husbandry straightforward once appropriate scale is provided.

Care Guide

Water: 15–27 °C, pH 6.5–8.0, moderate hardness; robust filtration for large bioload. Tank: 1000 L minimum for adults; minimal décor, open swimming; heavy filtration. Feeding: Live fish, crayfish, large earthworms; accepts large pellets and cut fish with training. Breeding: Gravel nest; male guards eggs and fry — requires a pond-scale setup for success. Compatibility: Solitary — will consume anything significantly smaller than itself.
