Rhinogobius leavelli
Also known as: Leavelli Rhinogobius Goby, Taiwan Stream Goby, Leavell's Goby
Origin: Taiwan, southeastern China
Rhinogobius leavelli is a medium-sized stream goby distributed across Taiwan and the coastal rivers of southeastern China, where it inhabits clear, moderately fast-flowing streams over gravel and sand. It is one of the more adaptable species in the genus, tolerating a broader range of water conditions than some of the more demanding Chinese Rhinogobius. Males display subtle orange-brown facial markings and iridescent blue cheek spots, while females are plain brown. The species is an active benthic predator, spending most of its time perching on stones while scanning for small invertebrates. Its calm temperament and relative ease of care make it a good starting point for aquarists new to the Rhinogobius genus. It has been bred in captivity, depositing small egg clutches under flat rocks or in short pipe sections.
Water: 18–24 °C, pH 7.0–7.8, GH 5–15, KH 3–10; moderate flow; tolerates slightly alkaline water. Tank: 60 L minimum; river pebble and smooth sand substrate; provide flat stones and short ceramic pipes as caves. Feeding: Carnivore; accepts frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, and small sinking pellets readily. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards eggs; fry are amphidromous but some success reported with saltwater larval rearing. Compatibility: Peaceful; keeps well with upper-level schooling fish and non-competing benthic species.
