Yasuhikotakia lecontei
Also known as: Lecontei Loach, Le Conte's Loach
Origin: Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam
Yasuhikotakia lecontei is a medium-sized loach found across Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam in both clear and turbid river systems. It has a relatively plain appearance compared to some of its congeners — a pale body with faint, diffuse barring and a subtle lustre — but it makes up for this with its lively, gregarious nature in the aquarium.
This species is quite adaptable to a range of water conditions, making it more forgiving than many other Yasuhikotakia. It appreciates a well-filtered tank with plenty of hiding places, a soft sandy substrate, and groups of conspecifics or other compatible loaches. Lecontei Loach is notably active during daylight hours, making it a dynamic addition to any Southeast Asian biotope display.
Feeding is easy: the species accepts high-quality sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, and a variety of small live invertebrates. Its relatively uncomplicated requirements make it one of the more accessible Yasuhikotakia species for hobbyists stepping beyond the most common loaches.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–28°C, moderate hardness, well-filtered. Tank: 80 L minimum; open sandy areas alongside cave hides and plant cover. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, tubifex, and small invertebrates. Breeding: No captive breeding records available. Compatibility: Peaceful; compatible with most community fish of similar or larger size.
