Scleropages leichardti
Also known as: Leichardti Arowana, Spotted Saratoga, Southern Saratoga
Origin: Australia
Scleropages leichardti is found in the Fitzroy River drainage of Queensland, Australia. It is distinguished from S. jardini by its range of pink-red spots along the flanks and a somewhat less aggressive temperament, though it remains territorial and predatory. It inhabits slower river sections and billabongs in subtropical eastern Queensland. Regulatory status varies by country; verify local import and keeping laws before purchase. A premium specimen fish for the dedicated large-tank keeper.
Water: 20-28°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard; cooler than most tropical arowanas. Tank: Minimum 1500L; long footprint with secure lid; moderate decor acceptable. Feeding: Carnivore; large insects, prawns, earthworms, whole small fish; train onto pellets. Breeding: Paternal mouthbrooder; rarely attempted outside specialist facilities. Compatibility: More tolerant than Jardini but still predatory; pair only with very large robust fish.
