Leone Barb

Barbus leonensis originates from the coastal river systems of Sierra Leone and Guinea in West Africa, where it inhabits clear, soft, slightly acidic forest streams and lowland rivers. It is a slender, elegant barb with a faintly golden-silver body and an indistinct lateral stripe running from the humeral region to the caudal peduncle. Mature males develop a subtle orange tint to the fins during the breeding season.

In the aquarium, Barbus leonensis does best in soft, slightly acidic to neutral water with gentle filtration. It is a schooling species that benefits from groups of six or more and pairs excellently with other West African fish including pelvicachromis cichlids, Synodontis catfish, and smaller tetras. A planted aquarium with driftwood and leaf litter recreates its forest stream habitat.

It is an uncomplicated feeder, consuming flake, micro-pellets, and small frozen or live foods without hesitation. Its peaceful temperament and modest size make it a fine addition to any West African community aquarium.

Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft to slightly moderate hardness (GH 2–10). Tank: 60 L minimum; planted with driftwood and leaf litter; gentle flow. Feeding: Omnivore; flake, micro-pellets, frozen daphnia, brine shrimp, micro-worms. Breeding: Egg-scatterer over fine plants; soft, acidic water aids conditioning. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal with pelvicachromis, West African tetras, and smaller synodontis.
