Pterophyllum scalare var.
Also known as: Leopard Angelfish, Spotted Angelfish, Leopard Angel
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, South America)
The Leopard Angelfish is a selectively bred captive strain expressing randomly distributed dark spots and blotches over a silver-gold body, resembling the rosette pattern of a leopard. Unlike the marble strain's sweeping colour blocks, the leopard pattern consists of smaller, rounder markings scattered across the flanks and fins.
The leopard pattern results from a combination of the marble gene with selective breeding for smaller, more defined spots. Pattern expression varies between individuals and changes somewhat as fish mature — juveniles may show more muted spotting that intensifies with age.
Leopard angels are fully hardy and adaptable. Their speckled pattern pairs well with lush planted backgrounds where the spotting helps them blend into dappled light, mimicking their Amazonian habitat origins.
Water: Temperature 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, GH 2–12, KH 1–6; regular water changes maintain vibrant spotting colour. Tank: 150 L tall aquarium; dense planting with Echinodorus and floating plants creates natural dappled light conditions. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and varied live foods; feed 2–3 times daily. Breeding: Spawns readily in pairs on broad leaves; leopard pattern partially heritable in offspring. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium-bodied tetras, corydoras, and non-aggressive cichlids; remove nano fish.
